  • Deadly weapons seized from the streets of Birmingham

    The haul, including a lethal MAC-10 machine pistol – similar to one used to kill innocent teenage party-goers Letisha Shakespeare and Charlene Ellis – was seized in a swoop on a lock-up in Nechells.
  • Birmingham eyes asset sales

    Birmingham council leaders are in talks with Middle East sovereign funds, hoping to plug a budget hole selling some of the billions of pounds of trophy assets owned by Britain’s second city. The NEC — Britain’s biggest exhibition centre, prime real estate and a stake in Birmingham Airport could all be up for grabs, councillors said, as they look to fund big capital projects at a time when the national government is demanding deep spending cuts.
  • Birmingham New Street station evacuated in fire scare

    Network Rail said the fire alarms sounded at about 0920 BST prompting a full station evacuation. British Transport Police said the alarm had been set off in error.
  • Birmingham coffin works plans to be resurrected

    PLANS to resurrect a historic Birmingham coffin works which produced fittings for Winston Churchill, Princess Diana and Neville Chamberlain are finally set to go ahead. The factory, which was built in 1894 has been bought by the Birmingham Conservation Trust with £150,000 from the city council.
