  • Huge blaze in Birmingham city centre leads to gridlock and asbestos fears

    HUGE plumes of black smoke engulfed Birmingham city centre tonight as more than 75 firefighters battled a warehouse blaze. A 400-metre exclusion zone was set up around the paint warehouse in Cecil Street, off Newtown Row, Newtown, and nearby residents were told to stay indoors because of the risk of lethal asbestos dust.

  • New campaign targets culture of binge drinking

    SUTTON town centre joins Birmingham’s Broad Street as the two key areas targeted by health chiefs in a hard-hitting campaign warning youths of the dangers of binge drinking. NHS Birmingham East and North is focusing on young revellers visiting the two popular nightspots but instead of discouraging drinking altogether, it aims to encourage youths to stay on the ‘right side of drunk’.
  • ‘Observer’ call for Birmingham elections

    The Stirrer recently reported on calls by Birmingham councillor Ayoub Khan to introduce photo ID at the ballot box to combat postal voting fraud. Local Conservative blogger Guy The Mac reckons the city might need independent observers after a day spent touring the city’s polling booths which revealed numerous abuses of the system.
