Local traffic restrictions for Conservative Party Conference, 3rd – 6th October, The ICC Birmingham
The Conservative Party Conference is coming to The ICC Birmingham from 3rd to 6th October and up to 14,000 delegates and visitors along with large numbers of media are expected to attend this major event.
Bringing an event of this size and stature to the city requires major planning and organisation. Key city agencies including Birmingham City Council, West Midlands Police and Marketing Birmingham will be working together to ensure there is as little disruption as possible to local residents and businesses. However there will be some temporary changes to be aware of.
The pedestrian mall through The ICC will be closed to the general public throughout the conference. The area around the building, including Centenary Square, the Hyatt Regency Hotel and the last block of Broad Street up to Paradise Forum will see some changes to access for traffic.
Before the Conference
The following vehicle restrictions will apply to allow barrier works to be undertaken. During these times, access will not be permitted to any vehicle.
Thursday 30th September 2010 7pm to Friday 1st October 2010 5am Broad Street between Gas Street and Paradise Circus. Access to Broad Street between Gas Street and Sheepcote Street via Holliday Street and Berkley Street only.
Friday 1st October 2010 5am to Sunday 3rd October 2010 8am Broad Street open but traffic in each direction on Broad Street near the junction with Gas Street will be between narrow 3 metre wide gates.
Roads
Wednesday 29th September 2010 7pm to Thursday 7th October 2010 5am Bridge Street, adjacent to the Hyatt Regency Hotel, will be pedestrian access only.
Sunday 3rd October 2010 8am to Thursday 7th October 2010 5am Cambridge Street (between Civic Close and Brindley Drive) and Broad Street (between Paradise Circus Queensway and Gas Street) will be pedestrian access only.
Sunday 3rd October 2010 8am to Thursday 7th October 2010 5am All vehicle access to Broad Street (Sheepcote Street to Gas Street), Oozells Street, Gas Street and Granville Street (Broad Street to Tennant Street) will be via Holliday Street and Berkley Street only.
As Broad Street will not be available as a through route for vehicles during the conference, motorists are advised to use the following alternative routes:
- Into city direction from Hagley Road, via Monument Road, Alston Street, Ring Road, Spring Hill Circus and A457 to Paradise Circus.
- Into city direction from Five Ways Island, via Islington Row, Bath Row, Holloway Head, Holloway Circus Queensway, Suffolk Street Queensway to Paradise Circus.
- Out of city direction, from Paradise Circus via A457, Ring Road to Five Ways.
All temporary traffic restrictions will be removed from 5am on Thursday 7th October 2010.
Car parks
Brindley Drive, Brindleyplace and National Indoor Arena car parks are unaffected.
Pay and display
On street pay and display bay parking suspensions will be in operation during the conference in Bridge Street and sections of Berkley Street.
Taxis
The taxi rank in Broad Street outside Reflex and the taxi rank in Bridge Street next to the Hyatt Regency Hotel will be suspended during the conference. Extra temporary ranks will be provided in Berkley Street and Broad Street (Oozells Street to Gas Street).
Buses
Throughout the conference, bus stops in the section on Broad Street between Five Ways and Sheepcote Street in both directions will continue to be in use. Stops in Broad Street between Sheepcote Street and Paradise Circus Queensway will be suspended. For further information call: Traveline 0871 200 2233.
Hotels
The Hyatt Regency Hotel will not be open to the public from Thursday 30th September through to Wednesday 6th October. All other hotels are open as usual.
Restaurants, bars, attractions, theatres, cinemas
All of the bars and restaurants along Broad Street and in Brindleyplace will be open as usual. However, The Hyatt Regency Hotel’s restaurant, bar, gym, pool and Amala Spa will be closed to the public from Thursday 30th September – Wednesday 6th October, open to delegates only.
The National Sealife Centre, Crescent Theatre, Ikon and Number Nine Galleries in Brindleyplace are unaffected by the conference.
The ICC will be closed to the general public from Thursday 30th September, re-opening Thursday 7th October at 12 noon. The public will not be able to access, collect or book concert tickets for Symphony Hall, or use the café or gallery during this time.
Cineworld cinema on Broad Street is not affected by the conference.
Birmingham Register Office
Access to the Register Office (at its new location in Holliday Wharf, Holliday Street, Birmingham. B1 1TJ) will be available at all times via Suffolk Street Queensway into Holliday Street.
Commercial
The Brasshouse Language Centre, Transport & General Workers Union and other offices along Broad Street are again unaffected by the conference.
Five Ways
All of the shops and outlets at Five Ways and Broadway Plaza are unaffected by the conference.
