For a few weeks, I had the opportunity to test the Sony A8, one of the 2020 models of the Japanese company. The model we tested was the 55 inch model (KD-55A8), and it is a device with Android TV, with support for HDR10, HLG and Dolby Vision, Acoustic Surface Audio technology and above all the excellent X1 processor. Ultimate.
In terms of design, this A8 series comes with a style that Sony has long used in its OLED TVs. The lines are minimalist, especially at the front, to highlight what matters most, its screen, and have really fine margins. On the margins we find a metallic finish with rounded corners, an element that involves all faces and which gives a pleasant and premium appearance. In general, its design is very pleasant, especially that of the base which can go unnoticed thanks to a minimalist approach.
Its physical connectivity is present in two recesses on the right side (of those who watch TV from behind) and on the bottom. On the side we find the CI + slot, a composite video and stereo audio input via an adapter and on a 3.5 mm port, the headphone output, two USB 2.0 ports (5 V, 500 mA) and the first HDMI 2.0 inputs b (all with HDCP 2.3). At the bottom we have a third USB port (5V, 900mA) and the other three HDMI inputs, where the third is equipped with eARC, the enhanced audio return channel, optical digital output, Ethernet port and connectors for antenna. Yes, this Sony A8 has DVB-T2 and DVB-S2 TV tuners fully compatible with HEVC.
Its support consists of two metal elements positioned close to both sides, and the system that allows them to be fixed to the body of the TV is interesting, since no screws are used. Sony decided to use a very strong locking set, and this is possible due to the position and weight of the TV itself. We can choose to use one of two assembly methods: the classic method, which places the underside a short distance from the support surface, creating a very clean and pleasing solution to the eye. The second option guides the base differently to increase the space between the top and the edge of the TV. In this way, it is possible to easily place a sound bar under the TV, without it covering part of the screen.
Sony has again used the Android TV platform on this device, which is present with all the functions. In other words, we have access to the Play Store, built-in Chromecast features and interaction with Google Assistant through the microphone on the remote, with the added option of combining an external speaker. If you choose this setup, you can also interact with them using Alexa voice commands. Its internal media player is capable of playing files on the local network or on external storage devices formatted in FAT16, FAT32, exFAT and NTFS. The file types that can be played include virtually all major video, audio, and image formats.
In terms of picture quality, this was probably the best TV I have ever tested. Its black levels are incredibly intense and rich, besides being provided with a lot of consistency and stability. Its shadow details and dark colors never seem overwhelmed or artificial.
Your images are spectacularly detailed, dense and three-dimensional, especially since Sony’s bit mapping system is available to alleviate any possible distraction from HDR color bands.
And if the picture is good, the sound is not far behind. It uses an acoustic surface system, which vibrates the TV screen to create sound, so there is no need to install normal speakers and your sound is sent directly to the space where it is mounted. . In addition, Sony has added a pair of bass speakers, which are mounted on the back of the device.
What do I have to say about your sound? Simply spectacular.
Sony A8 Review: final verdict
This Sony A8 is a very beautiful TV, with a spectacular picture, breathtaking sound, and above all it is a beautiful TV, which will certainly look great in any room.
Everything has managed to captivate me on this TV, and without the lack of HDR10 +, I would consider it “perfect”.
