Microsoft has just released KB4577586, an optional update for Windows 10 that removes native Adobe Flash support from the system. Support for Flash, on Windows and its major browsers, is slated to be completely phased out between late 2020 and late January 2021. Yet Microsoft wanted to go further, to identify the issues that this can cause.
This latest update, with KB4577586, as already mentioned, is optional, but it’s still an inflection point. This catalog update effectively removes native Flash support in Windows 10 and thus prevents any return. The update only removes the system component included with Windows 10. The copy of Flash Player you installed is still entitled to a few weeks suspension. Likewise, the update does not remove the Flash plugin on browsers that you may have installed on your device.
If you’ve been following the news for a few months, you know Flash is entering its scheduled end of life. Previously essential for web development, the plugin has been replaced by HTML 5 and CSS3 features. Flash has a long history of performance issues that prevent PC and Mac manufacturers from extending battery life. Not to mention its impact on security. Not only is Flash generally illustrated by the discovery of major security vulnerabilities, but in addition, the program is often used as an attack vector.

Microsoft explains that this optional early update is primarily intended to detect issues that removing Flash support might cause:
“We are releasing this Flash removal update online before End of Support, to help our customers test and validate their environments for any impact that removing Adobe Flash Player may have.”
Last month, the publisher revealed when Flash support ended. The publisher had previously announced the arrival of the Flash removal update, but not until 2021.
