Netflix today announced that it has signed agreements to make more anime content available on its streaming platform. If the platform already includes many cult animes, such as Hunter X Hunter, Naruto or One Punch Man, but also several original creations (The Knights of the Zodiac, Saint Seya, Castlevania, etc.), the latter should now benefit from new creations from Japanese studios Anima & Company, Science Saru and Mappa, but also from the South Korean studio Mir.
These four new and unprecedented partnerships are expected to explore “New stories and new formats to entertain anime fans around the world,” Netflix promised in a statement.
By announcing these new partnerships, Netflix thus seems to confirm its desire to create new original content, in particular through the manga genre, which is particularly popular internationally.
“In just four years, we’ve built a Tokyo-based team that works to entertain anime fans around the world with a new and ambitious narrative,” said Taiki Sakurai, chief host of Netflix’s anime section.
Netflix signs an agreement with 4 animation studios
It must be said that if the four studios with which the entertainment giant has just signed don’t tell them anything, they are far from being unknown in the world of animation. In 2017, Science Saru had already won the Crystal Award for best feature film at the Annecy festival for the film Lu Over the Wall. A few months ago, the studio was also very successful with Netflix subscribers with the launch of the original series Japan Sinks. For his part, Mir is particularly known for his animation Voltron: Legendary Defender and has announced the release of an animated film around the universe of Geralt of Rivia with The Witcher: Nightmare of the Wolf.
