New adaptation of the Adventures of Pinocchio hits theaters

In the new adaptation of the adventures of “Pinocchio”, directed by Matteo Garrone, the most famous Italian puppet is sculpted by Roberto Benigni and comes to life under the young name Federico Ielapi. “Pinocchio” is the opening film of the 13th edition of the Italian Film Festival, which starts on November 4th and arrives on November 5th in national cinemas.

Lone carpenter Geppetto (Roberto Benigni) builds a wooden doll that comes to life, as if by magic. Overwhelmed by an unexpected happiness, Geppetto soon adopts the child, whom he calls Pinocchio (Federico Ielapi). Disobeying his father, Pinocchio is manipulated by strangers who lead him to a series of almost fatal misfortunes. Tested over and over again in his adventures across incredible lands, Pinocchio will have to find a way to make his greatest wish come true: to be a real boy.

The argument of Matteo Garrone (director of ‘Gomorra’, ‘Dogman’, ‘The Tale of Tales’) and Massimo Ceccherini (‘Picasso Face’), shows the dark side of the story written 130 years ago by Carlo Collodi, in what is already considered the most faithful adaptation of the children’s classic. The role of Geppetto was in the hands of Roberto Benigni – himself the author of a version of Pinocchio, from 2020 – author of ‘A Vida é Bela’, nominated for seven Oscars in 1997, winner of the best actor , Best Foreign Film and Best Dramatic Soundtrack.

Exhibited at the 70th Berlin Film Festival, ‘Pinocchio’ was the second most awarded film at the 65th David Awards (the equivalent of an Oscar in the Italian universe), for which it was nominated in 15 categories, including Best Picture, Best Makeup and Best Songwriter. Mark Coulier’s talent has contributed to this, whose characterization work has already won him two Oscars for best characterization (“Grand Budapest Hotel” in 2015, “The Iron Lady” in 2011). The song is by Dario Marianelli, Oscar winner for Best Soundtrack (“Atonement” in 2008).
