Samsung announces the new (and powerful) Exynos 1080

As expected, Samsung today announced its latest chip that will power high-end phones in 2021, the Exynos 1080. Its presentation was made at an event in China, where its technical specifications were revealed, which theory are at least impressive.

The first big news is that it is made using the 5nm process, and that alone ensures better power efficiency. Then it has four high performance Cortex-A78 cores, where one of those cores can run at speeds up to 2.8 GHz, while the other 3 are capable of running at 2.6 GHz. These 4 cores are accompanied by 4 other Cortex-A55 cores, ideal for less demanding tasks, and able to operate at speeds up to 2.0 Ghz.

But the news does not stop there, since other innovations offered by this processor cover many use cases, starting with the speed of execution of tasks. The company claims that in single-core mode this Exynos 1080 offers 50% more speed than the previous generation of chips, while in multi-core mode the performance should be doubled.

Exynos 1080 is now official and coming soon to devices

For graphics we have the Mali-G78 MP10 GPU, which offers in-line performance with the Mali-G77 MP11 built into the Exynos 990 processor, which is for example in the Samsung Galaxy Note 20 Ultra. This GPU can handle FullHD + resolution displays with 144Hz refresh rate or QHD + resolution with 90Hz refresh rate, while the Image Processor (FAI) can support sensors up to at 200MP with HDR10 + video recording, and with 4K resolution at 60 fps.

The Exynos 1080 also supports LPDDR5 RAM, UFS 3.1 storage, obviously has a 5G modem with support for sub-6 GHz and mmWave networks, integrates GPS, Bluetooth 5.2, Wi-Fi 6 and more. During the presentation, it was announced that the world’s first smartphone to use the processor will be Vivo’s new high-end phone.
